High on the Tablelands of North Queensland, the township of Ravenshoe has been celebrating the “Torimba Festival” since 1969. This community event is a celebration of Tourism and Timber with events running over two weeks in October each year.
TORIMBA FESTIVAL 2021…we’re good to go!
The 2021 TORIMBA Festival is locked and loaded with this year expected to have record crowds since Ravenshoe is now a delightfully COVID free destination for travelers…and let’s face it we didn’t get to kick our heals up last year at the Mardi Gras. Please note we will have a COVID safety plan in place so the standard check-ins we are all pretty much used to will now be in place…alongside any new and funky rules the QLD government may introduce in time for the events.
This year’s theme is ’50 Years in the Forest’ to recognise just how long Ravenshoe have been running our annual hometown event that brings the whole community out from their hobbit holes to get together and have some fun. A lot of hard work and innovation goes into the parade floats that chariot the Queens through the streets and showcase our cornerstone businesses, schools, clubs and services…not to mention you can probably gather the whole year’s supply of lollies from the sidelines!
There have been some minor changes to the program this year with the wood chop being moved up to the street adjacent to Festival Hall… outside of where the Festival of The Forest is presented for the whole 2 weeks of the event. The Grand opening happens at 12.30pm on the Saturday 2nd of October
There are so many activities to get involved in…whether you are a visitor to town or resident! The whole town will be a wash with decorations, colour and stories, including the Colouring In Competition entries on display, the Best Decorated Windows and Businesses, the Bowl’s Club Bingo and RATS Quiz Night. The Queen Entrant’s Raffle is already gathering some awesome prizes and if any businesses or persons wish to donate, any form of prize would be gratefully accepted alongside the haul of goodies we have in store. You may have a bag of potatoes, some plants or gardening products, a food hamper, or a bottle of something delicious to donate. All contributions ‘great and small’ will be enormously welcomed as this is one of the major fundraising activities we do for the festival!
As you will all appreciate, in these unusual times (cue twilight zone theme song for those old enough to know what I’m on about), these plans may be updated as things change, so please watch this space. The TORIMBA committee can still get things up and running at short notice, so will leave any cancelled events ‘open to change’. The Ravenshoe and District Weekly and our Facebook page will keep you all updated as news comes our way.
Let’s keep all the fun and festivities going and remember, this year’s theme is ’50 Years in the Forest’ so get your Greenman, Monster of the Melon, and forest creatures happening. We look forward to seeing you in town for Mardi Gras day!!
Festival of the Forest
Timber craft exhibition is held during the Torimba Festival. Talented craftsmen from around the nation enter their best work to be judged and viewed by festival goers. The Festival of the Forest showcases Ravenshoe’s heritage as a former timber town as well as putting Ravenshoe on the map for tourists as a ‘must see’ destination.
Our Story in the Street — Commemorating 50 years of Torimba’s history and the community roots of our forest timbers.
On Saturday 2nd of October, Ravenshoe community gathered to unveil 2 large photographic murals that beautifully capture the timber history of Qld highest town. Join us for the commemorative book launch that details the story behind the last 50 years of Torimba Festival on Thursday 7th Oct
Torimba Mardi Gras Parade
A highlight of the Festival! Locals and visitors alike celebrate and participate in old fashioned games and activities, Truck Pull, Woodchop, amusement rides, and market stalls all on the Main Street of Ravenshoe. The excitement of the street parade fosters community spirit that unites the town and district.
Torimba Quiz Night
A great family night in the town hall to test your knowledge in teams of 6 and 8. 2021 was a huge event packed with colourful costumes. For this event the hall was delightfully turned decorated into this year’s forest theme with our Queen’s in attendance as usual. This year’s winning team was “The Rainforest Chicks” showing their style…clever ladies!
The culmination of the festival, this is the Queen Entrants night of nights with the crowning of the Torimba Queen, Charity Queen and Miss Personality. It is a great opportunity for entrants, volunteers and locals to glam up and party the night away to live music and dancing, which once again brings the community together.
